Plenary Speakers

Allison Burkette is professor and head of the Linguistics department at the University of Kentucky. She is the editor of the Linguistic Atlas Project (LAP), a set of survey research projects about the words and pronunciations of everyday American English. Her research centers around language variation and change, a subject she approaches from both a large-scale historical perspective using data from the LAP and a smaller-scale perspective that focuses on identity-making within individual interactions. Her forthcoming book, Homewords: The Life of an American Vocabulary, will be published by Oxford University Press. Edgar Schneider is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Regensburg. Although initially trained in dialect geography, he is primarily a sociolinguist. He is especially notable for his development of the "Dynamic Model" of the evolution of Postcolonial Englishes. In recent years, he has mainly worked in the young field of World Englishes, investigating the distinctive varieties of English emerging around the world. For many years, he was the editor for the leading journal English World-Wide, and he has published many studies on structural properties of English varieties based on corpus and fieldwork data. Laura Wright is a professor of English at the University of Cambridge. She is a historical sociolinguist who has worked on the history of Standard English and the London dialect. She has published work on historical code-switching, on the development of Standard English, and the impact of English imperialism on London English in North America and elsewhere. She also has a particular interest in the social connotations of house names and street names across time and space. Her recent publications include "On Words for London Wharves," (2022, The London Journal) and the monograph The Social Life of Words: A Historical Approach (2023).
