Requirements for the A.B. in Linguistics
The Core Curriculum
During their first years at the university, whether at UGA itself, at another campus of the University System of Georgia, or at another university, students should pursue completion of the Core requirements in the liberal arts. Students who propose to graduate from UGA are subject to the Core Curriculum of the University System of Georgia. Specific course recommendations for the Areas appear below:
Area B: Institutional Options
The elective hours of Area B should be used, if needed, for a foreign language course (see Area F).
Area C: Humanities/Fine Arts
LING 2100 or LING 2100H The Study of Language, the prerequisite to many upper- division Linguistics courses, should be taken in partial fulfillment of this area.
Area F: Major Related Courses (18 hours or 6 courses),
1. Required. 0-3 hours. LING 2100/2100H The Study of Language (if not taken for a different area of the Core)
2. Required. 3-10 hours. Competency in one foreign language through the fourth semester.
3. Required. 6-8 hours. Two courses in one non-Indo-European language, or one course in each of two non-Indo-European languages (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Swahili, Yoruba, and others; see the list of languages offered at UGA for more information).
4. Options to fulfill 18 hours, as needed. 0-12 hours. 1000/2000-level courses from the following areas: Anthropology (ANTH), Artificial Intelligence (ARTI), Classics (CLAS, GREK, LATN), Comparative Literature (CMLT), English (ENGL), Geography (GEOG 1010, 2000, 2100, 2150H), Germanic and Slavic Languages (GRMN, RUSS), Philosophy (PHIL), Religion (RELI), Romance Languages (ROML, FREN, ITAL, PORT, SPAN), or Speech Communication (SPCM).
Students who transfer to UGA will be expected to satisfy these Core requirements, even if the institution from which they are transferring did not offer some of the courses we require, including those in Area F.
Major requirements: 9 courses (27 hours)
Linguistics majors must take LING 2100/2100H if they have not taken it to satisfy a core requirement.

Transfer Students
It will normally be the case that the Undergraduate Admissions Office will not be able to assign appropriate equivalents in UGA courses for Linguistics courses taken at other universities. Students should consult the Director to try to obtain accurate transfer assignments for Linguistics courses taken at other universities.
Students who transfer to UGA and who wish to major in Linguistics will be expected to satisfy UGA Core and major requirements, even if the institution from which they are transferring did not offer some of the courses we require. Transfer students who cannot complete the major requirements by the time that they achieve enough credits to graduate must still satisfy the major course requirements, even though it means that they will have more than enough credits to graduate.
Transfer credits may be used to satisfy UGA major and minor requirements in two ways: 1) if a course has transferred as equivalent to a UGA course, students may use that course to satisfy any requirement that the same course taken at UGA would satisfy; 2) if a course has transferred as LING elective credit, the course may be used to satisfy the requirement for an elective course in Linguistics, not as a replacement for a course specified under particular requirements.

Advising
Students are normally advised by a Franklin College advisor until they have declared a major and have accumulated 60 hours of course credit. Students with a newly declared major in Linguistics will be advised by the Director of the program until they are assigned to a faculty advisor. The following special cases may apply:
Students with a double major will be advised by someone from the department which has been given clearance authority; if Linguistics is the program with clearance authority, the student will be assigned a faculty advisor.
Students in the Honors Program who major in Linguistics will be assigned a faculty advisor, but will still receive advice about special Honors Program requirements (e.g. Honors thesis) and permission to register for special Honors sections from an advisor in the Honors Program.
Faculty advisement
Each student will be assigned to a faculty advisor no later than the end of the second term in the major. The faculty advisor will advise the student about course work each term; students are responsible for getting written notice of their advisement to the Linguistics Program office each term so that they can obtain computer clearance for registration. The faculty advisor is responsible for consultation with each student to plan the student's completion of all requirements for graduation, and to prepare the graduation checklist for approval and signature by the Director.

E-mail
Undergraduate students are expected to obtain an electronic mail address as soon as possible. You do not need a computer of your own to send and receive mail; there are many campus computer labs for this purpose. The faculty will use this medium for regular contact with all students as part of the regular advising and instructional process. Through e-mail students will regularly receive announcements of interest. Please inform the Linguistics Program office of your current e-mail address.
